Founded in 2016, Main & Maxwell offers a selection of high-quality art and handcrafted pieces at all price points. Come visit us on the corner of Main Street & Maxwell Avenue, shop with us and take some time to shop and dine in the Uptown. It is our intent to support our community by featuring locally and regionally produced art, craft, and food products from South Carolina.

 “Laura, owner and operator of Main & Maxwell, hails from New York City. She moved south in 1995 with her husband Matt, an Army Veteran and physician who was stationed at Eisenhower Medical Center. After winning an award for her abstract painting in the 2nd grade, Laura fell in love with art. In 1999 she began taking clay classes while her children were in school. Today she is an accomplished potter and creates work from her home studio, Bell House Pottery.

 Laura is a former teacher, a mother of two, and a friend to all. Most days you can find her at Main and Maxwell, singing along to the tunes of the day playing throughout the galley. She’s also an avid shower singer, car singer, and grocery store singer. If she were to write a book about her life, it would be titled “So many things I know: It’s a curse, really.”  All of the things Laura knows, combined with her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open Main & Maxwell, the first retail store of its kind in Uptown Greenwood.

 Firsthand woman to Laura is gallery manager Kristen Bennett. Kristen was one of the last born at Elberton Hospital in Georgia, likely because Kristen broke the mold. Perhaps the most unaware amateur comedians of her time, Kristen keeps the gallery fresh with her wit and style. She has loved art since childhood, creating hundreds of small, stapled books filled with stories of misspelled words and childlike illustrations. She’s a graduate of Lander University where she studied visual arts and today is a celebrated sketch artist and painter.

 Kristen lives in Greenwood with her two cats, Kevin and Jay who incidentally attended her college graduation. Among Kristen’s many talents is her ability to make nearly anyone laugh. If a famous actress were to play Kristen in a movie about her life, she says it would be Kristen Wiig. Perhaps Kristen’s most impressive attribute, however, is her knowhow in finding a needle in a haystack. How would she do it, you ask? She’d simply set the haystack on fire. Kristen is not only a talented artist with unmatched wit, but she’s also a genius, apparently.”
